MPSSAA Section Standings - updated 2/20/19
MPSSAA Section Standings - Updated on 2/20/19
All MCPS schools are placed into an MPSSAA region for the state tournament, and all regions are divided into two sections. The MCPS schools are spread across five different sections. The teams' win percentage (not including December holiday tournaments) is used to seed the teams, regardless of what county they may reside.
4A West Region Section 1 Standings
1. Churchill - 94.44% (18-1)
2. Whitman - 84.21% (16-3)
3. BCC - 63.16% (12-7)
4. WJ - 57.89% (11-8)
5. Einstein - 42.11% (8-11)
6. Kennedy - 5.26% (1-18)
7. Wheaton - 5.26% (1-18)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Churchill, 2. Whitman, 3. BCC, 4. WJ, 5. Einstein, 6. Kennedy, 7. Wheaton
Churchill sealed up the #1 seed with a dominating win over Gaithersburg. Whitman will be the #2 seed. Churchill finishes their season Thursday with a game with RM while Whitman closes Magruder.
As predicted, BCC has wrapped up the #3 seed with their win over RM. BCC finishes with a game with Blair while WJ should beat Northwest. WJ's loss to Sherwood last week, and their head to head lost to BCC is the difference in the seeding. WJ will host a home game as the #4 seed. Einstein has only won 2 of their last 6 games, but they secured no worse than the #5 seed many weeks ago.
The #6 seed will come down to games on Thursday and Friday. A Kennedy win at home over Einstein (Friday) or a Wheaton loss to Springbrook (Thursday) secures the #6 seed for Kennedy as they have the tie-breaker over Wheaton since they beat Wheaton earlier in the year. Kennedy will know what they need to do before they take the court on Friday.
4A West Region Section 2 Standings
1. Clarksburg - 78.95% (15-4)
2. Quince Orchard - 68.42% (13-6)
3. Richard Montgomery - 55.56% (10-8)
4. Gaithersburg - 52.63% (10-9)
5. Northwest - 27.78% (5-13)
6. Wootton - 5.56% (1-17)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Clarksburg, 2. QO, 3. RM, 4. Gaithersburg, 5. Northwest, 6. Wootton
Clarksburg clinched the #1 seed several weeks ago. As predicted, QO has clinched the #2 seed with 9 wins in their last 10 games.
Also, there is a strong chance that the 3 seed might come down to a coin flip. Richard Montgomery still has two games to play, traveling to Churchill on Thursday night and to Seneca Valley on Friday. Assuming that RM loses tonight to Churchill, it will come down to Friday nights games between RM at SV and QO at Gaithersburg. Based on previous results, RM would be favored over SV and QO over Gaithersburg, but it would not be surprising if the slight underdogs both won. They have split their two matchups so thus the coin flip!
Northwest and Wootton will finish as the 5 and 6 seeds.
The section tournament could be interesting. While Clarksburg won by 20 over QO, they lost to RM and beat Gaithersburg twice by a combined six points. It's all about matchups!
4A North Region Section 2 Standings
1. Paint Branch - 84.21% (16-3)
2. Sherwood - 84.21% (16-3)
3. Urbana - 40.0% (8-12)
4. Blair - 38.89% (7-11)
5. Northwood - 36.84% (7-12)
6. Springbrook - 31.56% (6-13)
PROJECTIONS - 1/2. Paint Branch and Sherwood coin flip, 3/4. Northwood and Urbana coin flip, 5 - Blair, 6 - Springbrook
This section continues to be interesting!
Paint Branch and Sherwood will be the top two seeds and have first-round byes. Damascus did Sherwood a huge favor with an upset of Paint Branch, allowing the Warriors to draw even at 16-3. Paint Branch travels to Clarksburg on Thursday for their last game of the year. While Paint Branch is favored, Clarksburg has a good squad looking to peak as they head into their section tournament. Meanwhile, Sherwood finishes Friday with a game against rival Blake. Sherwood will know what they have to do to close out their season. Sherwood will need to win to either win the #1 seed outright (with a Paint Branch loss) or to tie Paint Branch and go to a coin flip.
The rest of this section is very chaotic.
Urbana has finished their season at 8-12 and currently sits in as the #3 seed.
Northwood sits at 7-12 after being upset by Northwest. Northwood hosts Watkins Mill on Friday and would tie Urbana with a win. This is a game that Northwood can win which would force a coin flip with Urbana. But what seed would they flip for?
Blair will only play 19 games so they cannot end up in a tie with anyone. They have the toughest remaining game as they host BCC and will be a strong underdog. If Blair can pull the upset, they will finish 8-11 and earn the 3 seed. If they lose and Northwood wins, Northwood and Urbana will flip for the 3 seed and Blair would fall to the 5 seed.
So while Northwood could end up the 3 seed, they also could end up the 6 seed! Springbrook holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Northwood. If Springbrook can win their game against Wheaton (they would be strong favorites) and Northwood loses to Watkins Mill, then Springbrook would end up the 5 seed and Northwood the 6 seed.
3A West Section 1 Standings
1. Westminster - 72.2% (13-5)
2. Rockville - 57.89% (11-8)
3. Manchester Valley - 41.18% (7-10)
4. Blake - 36.84% (7-12)
5. Watkins Mill - 26.32% (5-14)
6. Magruder - 0% (0-19)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Westminster, 2. Rockville, 3. Manchester Valley, 4. Blake, 5. Watkins Mill, 6. Magruder
The section championship goes through Carroll County. Westminster is 13-5 with remaining games against Liberty and Glenelg and they will be favored over both teams. Westminster will hold the #1 seed.
Rockville has been one of the great surprises in MCPS play this year. Currently, they sit at 11-8 and they have games against Wootton remaining. They are heavy favorites against Wootton and will finish 12-8 to get the #2 seed.
Currently, Manchester Valley sits as the #3 seed at 7-10. They had a game canceled on Wednesday due to snow against Owings Mill that would have been a win. The loss of this game could really hurt them in seeding as they likely end up with only 19 games that count in seeding. The worst they can finish is 7-12.
Blake had a big win over Springbrook but will be a heavy underdog against Sherwood on Friday night. Except them to finish 7-13, meaning that Manchester Valley would hold onto the #3 seed even if they lose their last two games.
Watkins Mill takes the #5 seed with a tough game left against Northwood. Win or lose, they are locked into the #5 seed.
Magruder will be the #6 seed.
2A West Section 2 Standings
1. Middletown - 87.51% (18-3)
2. Poolesville - 84.21% (16-3)
3. Damascus - 73.68% (14-5)
4. Walkersville - 68.42% (13-6)
5. Seneca Valley - 52.63% (10-8)
6. Williamsport - 44.44% (8-10)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Middletown, 2. Poolesville, 3. Damascus, 4. Walkersville, 5. Seneca Valley, 6. Williamsport
This gets the vote for the MOST COMPETITIVE section in MPSSAA this year.
As projected, Middletown earned the #1 seed with wins this past week over Urbana and Tuscarora. Just a reminder that in a game that does not matter in the seeding, Middletown did beat Poolesville 50-42 in a Christmas holiday tournament. Even though they lost the Frederick County Championship this week to Frederick HS, Middletown will still be the top seed.
Poolesville has done a great job protecting the #2 seed as well as the defending MPSSAA 2A State Champions beat Clarksburg and Kennedy to run their current win streak to 11 games. They close this week with Damascus, but neither Walkersville or Damascus can catch them.
Damascus had a very impressive week with a big win over Paint Branch after a big win over Clarksburg and have proven that the projections in this blog are always up to be decided on the court (great job, Hornets!). They put their 7 game win streak on the line at Poolesville on Friday, February 22nd. This game will decide the MCPS 3A/2A Division championship and could impact who ends up with the 3 seed because...
Walkersville stumbled in an upset to Urbana. This put Walkersville at 13-6 with one remaining game vs Boonsboro. If Damascus loses and Walkersville wins, they will both finish 14-6 and a coin flip will determine that #3 seed.
Seneca Valley currently sits at 10-9, but the Eagles closing with RM at home. A win at home gets SV the #5 seed, but a loss puts them in danger of having a coin flip with Williamsport for the #5/6 seeds. Williamsport sits at 8-10 with two games remaining.
