MPSSAA Section Standings - Updated on 2/9/19
All MCPS schools are placed into a MPSSAA region for the state tournament, and all regions are divided into two sections. The MCPS schools are spread across five different sections. The teams' win percentage (not including December holiday tournaments) is used to seed the teams, regardless of what county they may reside.
4A West Region Section 1 Standings
1. Churchill - 94.12% (16-1)
2. Whitman - 87.50% (14-2) - 1.5 games behind Churchill
3. BCC - 62.50% (10-6) - 4.5 games behind Whitman since Whitman has the head-to-head tiebreaker
4. WJ - 58.82% (10-7) - 1 game behind BCC because BCC has the head-to-head tiebreaker
5. Einstein - 41.18% (7-10) - 3.5 games behind WJ because WJ swept Einstein this year
6. Kennedy - 6.25% (1-15) - Kennedy holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Wheaton
7. Wheaton - 6.25% (1-15)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Churchill, 2. Whitman, 3. BCC, 4. WJ, 5. Einstein, 6. Kennedy, 7. Wheaton
Churchill holds the inside track to the #1 seed after their win over Whitman this past week. They are heavy favorites in their remaining games with Blake, Gaithersburg and Richard Montgomery. Whitman's remaining schedule is a little easier, except one big opponent. The Vikings have a huge game against Paint Branch on Monday, February 11th that they must win if they want to keep pace, and then they will cruise over Seneca Valley, Wootton, and Magruder.
Right now, BCC has the inside track for the #3 seed as they have a 1/2 game lead over WJ and have the tiebreaker. BCC finishes with games vs Springbrook, Sherwood, RM and Blair. They will be favorites in each game except Sherwood, but all four opponents are capable of getting a win. WJ finishes with Rockville (toss up), Sherwood (underdog but winnable), and Northwest (heavily favored). Expect BCC to finish 12-8 or 13-9 and WJ to finish 12-8. Either way, BCC holds onto the 3 seed.
Kennedy likely holds onto the 6 seed. Kennedy will be a large underdog to three of their last four opponents (QO, Poolesville, Einstein) and likely also loses to Watkins Mill. Wheaton's schedule is easier with games vs Northwood, Watkins Mill, Rockville and Springbrook, but they will be underdogs in each of those games. Kennedy finishes with the 6 seed since they beat Wheaton earlier in the year.
4A West Region Section 2 Standings
1. Clarksburg - 87.5% (14-2)
2. Quince Orchard - 62.5% (10-6) - holds head-to-head tiebreaker over RM
3. Richard Montgomery - 62.5% (10-6)
4. Gaithersburg - 50% (8-8)
5. Northwest - 29.4% (5-12)
6. Wootton - 5.9% (1-16)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Clarksburg, 2. QO, 3. RM, 4. Gaithersburg, 5. Northwest, 6. Wootton
Clarksburg has distanced themselves from the pack and will clinch the #1 seed with a win or RM loss (they already have clinched over QO).
Quince Orchard projects to finish with the #2 seed as they have a much easier remaining schedule than RM. QO plays Seneca Valley, Kennedy, Watkins Mill, and Gaithersburg. They are heavy favorites over the first three and should finish no worse than 13-7. Since they also have the head-to-head tiebreaker over RM, Richard Montgomery would have to go 4-0 to claim the 3 seed. Meanwhile, Richard Montgomery has a very difficult closing schedule, playing Rockville, Whitman, BCC, and Churchill. Gaithersburg has a good chance to catch RM for the 4 seed but QO would have to fall apart for Gaithersburg to get to the 2 seed. Gaithersburg finishes with Magruder, Springbrook, Churchill, and QO. This battle could get very interesting as Gaithersburg will likely finish 10-10 or even 11-9 (depending on beating QO). RM could easily finish 11-9 or even fall to 10-10. They have split their two matchups so the 3 seed might come down to a coin flip.
Northwest and Wootton will finish as the 5 and 6 seeds.
The section tournament could be interesting. While Clarksburg won by 20 over QO, they lost to RM and beat Gaithersburg twice by a combined six points. It's all about matchups!
4A North Region Section 2 Standings
1. Paint Branch - 87.5% (14-2)
2. Sherwood - 81.3% (13-3)
3. Blair - 40.0% (6-9)
4. Urbana - 38.9% (7-11)
5. Springbrook - 37.5% (6-10)
6. Northwood - 31.3% (6-11)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Paint Branch, 2. Sherwood, 3. Northwood (project at 9-11), 4. Blair (8-11), 5. Springbrook (8-12), 6. Urbana (7-13) - any upsets and this gets really interesting!
This section will be interesting! Paint Branch and Sherwood will be the top two seeds and have first-round byes. Paint Branch has a tough schedule remaining. They play Whitman on Monday, Magruder, Damascus, and Clarksburg. They will be heavy favorites over Magruder, slight favorites over Damascus, and Clarksburg and Whitman are toss-ups. The Panthers host Whitman, but have to travel to Damascus and Clarksburg at the end of the season. They will finish no worse than 15-5, but 17-3 is more likely. Sherwood's schedule is a bit easier as they finish with Northwest, BCC, WJ, and Blake. Sherwood should beat Northwest and Blake and will be favored over WJ and BCC, although only slightly over BCC. Sherwood likely finishes no worse than 16-4 and possibly 17-3, meaning that Paint Branch needs to go 3-1 or even 4-0 over their last four to make sure they don't have to rely on a coin flip for the top seed. Given their experience, Paint Branch is the favorite for the top seed, but barely.
The rest of this section is very chaotic. Blair will only play 19 games so they cannot end up in a tie with anyone. Their last four games are Poolesville, Blake, Einstein, and BCC. They should finish no worse than 7-12 and likely finish 8-11. Springbrook has BCC, Gaithersburg, Blake, and Wheaton and will finish no worse than 8-12 and if they can upset Gaithersburg, they will be 9-11. Northwood has only three games left and they will be favorites over Wootton and possibly over Watkins Mill and Northwest as well. Northwood can easily finish 9-11 and will finish no worse than 8-12. Urbana sits at 7-11 and has just two games remaining, at Oakdale and home against Walkersville. They will not be favorites in either game and could easily finish 7-13. In tiebreakers between Springbrook, Northwood, and Urbana, only Springbrook and Northwood have played and Springbrook has the head to head advantage. Any tiebreaker involving Urbana likely involves a coin flip.
3A West Section 1 Standings
1. Westminster - 72.2% (13-5)
2. Rockville - 56.3% (9-7)
3. Blake - 37.5% (6-10)
4. Manchester Valley - 33.33% (5-10)
5. Watkins Mill - 18.8% (3-13)
6. Magruder - 0% (0-17)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Westminster, 2. Rockville, 3. Manchester Valley, 4. Blake, 5. Watkins Mill, 6. Magruder
The section championship goes through Carroll County. Westminster is 13-5 with remaining games against Liberty and Glenelg and they will be favored over both teams. Regardless, Rockville is not likely to catch Westminster. Westminster would have to lose both and Rockville win out.
Rockville has been one of the great surprised in MCPS play this year. Currently they sit at 9-7 and they have games against RM, WJ, Wootton and Wheaton remaining. They are heavy favorites against Wootton and Wheaton with the games against RM and WJ being tossups. Rockville did beat RM already once this year. Rockville finishes no worse than 11-9, could easily get to 12-8 and even could get to 13-7.
Watkins Mill likely takes the 5 seed, but they could get all the 4 seed. They sit at 3-13 with games left against Kennedy, Wheaton, QO and Northwood. They could easily win 3 of the last 4 (Kennedy, Wheaton, Northwood) to get to 6-14. Blake has a hard closing schedule being at Churchill, at Blair, at Springbrook, and Sherwood at home. Watkins Mill has the tiebreaker over Blake, so if they can even the records, they would get the higher seed. Ultimately, this will decide who gets to host the rematch in the playoffs.
Manchester Valley is the outlier. According to the Baltimore Sun, they are 6-10 but County Sports Zone has 5 games remaining against Fallston (toss up), Liberty (MV would be underdog), New Town (underdog), Owings Mill (favored) and Winters Mill (underdog). Assuming they are 6-9 in games that qualify for seeding, MV could get to as high as 8-12 or even 9-11, but even if they finish at 7-13, they will finish with the 3 seed. Now, they might be 5-10 in MPSSAA games at this point, meaning that they would have to win two to get to 7-13. Regardless, expect them to come through with the 3 seed.
2A West Section 2 Standings
1. Middletown - 87.5% (16-2)
2. Poolesville - 81.25% (13-3)
3. Walkersville - 70.59% (12-5)
4. Damascus - 68.8% (11-5)
5. Seneca Valley - 62.5% (10-6)
6. Williamsport - 42.86% (6-8) - missing games in their schedule
PROJECTIONS - 1. Middletown, 2. Poolesville, 3. Walkersville, 4. Damascus, 5. Seneca Valley, 6. Williamsport
This gets the vote for the MOST COMPETITIVE section in MPSSAA this year. Middletown has the inside track for the top seed. They sit at 16-2 with two games remaining against Linganore and Tuscarora. While Middletown is favored in both matchups, both teams are capable of pulling the upset. In a game that does not matter in the seeding, Middletown did beat Poolesville 50-42 in a Christmas holiday tournament.
Poolesville remains hot on the trail of Middletown with a 13-3 record including a 8 game win streak. The defending MPSSAA 2A State Champions finish with games against Blair, Clarksburg, Kennedy, and Damascus (in a game that will decide the 3A/2A MCPS Division Champion). While Poolesville will be favored against Blair and heavily favored against Kennedy, they have toss-up games against Clarksburg (16-2) and Damascus (13-5 and beaten Poolesville already once), although both of those games are at Poolesville in one of the toughest gyms to visit in Montgomery County. Poolesville needs too much help to catch Middletown in the face of that difficult schedule. The Falcons could get to 17-3 and could fall as far as to 15-5.
The Falcons need to win 3 of their last 4 to hold off Walkersville who currently sits at 12-5. Walkersville has three remaining games against Tuscarora, Boonsboro, and Urbana. Walkersville will be favored in all three and likely finish at 15-5. To keep from getting into a coin flip for the 2 seed, Poolesville needs to finish at least 16-4.
Damascus hovers behind Walkerville at 11-5, but seems fairly locked into the 4 seed. The Hornets have a very difficult remaining four games with home games against Clarksburg and Paint Branch and visits to Einstein and Poolesville. The Hornets might finish 1-3 (and the win over Einstein isn't a given) and feel they have played well. Poolesville, Clarksburg and Paint Branch are 41-7 (85%). The Hornets likely have to win their last four games to have a chance at the 3 or even 2 seeds, but they should hold off Seneca Valley despite their schedule.
Seneca Valley currently sits just one game behind Damascus at 10-6, but the Eagles closing schedule is brutal including games at Quince Orchard, Whitman at home, at Clarksburg, and RM at home. Their final four opponents are 48-16 (75%) and they could play well land lose all four games. Seneca Valley seems to be a strong bet for the 5 seed, but if Williamsport closes strong, there is an outside change the Eagles fall to the 6 seed.
