MPSSAA Section Standings - Updated on 2/12/19
MPSSAA Section Standings - Updated on 2/12/19
All MCPS schools are placed into an MPSSAA region for the state tournament, and all regions are divided into two sections. The MCPS schools are spread across five different sections. The teams' win percentage (not including December holiday tournaments) is used to seed the teams, regardless of what county they may reside.
This update includes Montgomery County games played on Tuesday, February 12th. Frederick and Carroll County had snow days on this day. Frederick will play their games on Wednesday, February 13 and Carroll County will play on 2/21.
4A West Region Section 1 Standings
1. Churchill - 94.44% (17-1)
2. Whitman - 83.33% (15-3)
3. BCC - 61.11% (11-7)
4. WJ - 61.11% (11-7)
5. Einstein - 41.18% (7-10) - 3.5 games behind WJ because WJ swept Einstein this year
6. Kennedy - 5.56% (1-17)
7. Wheaton - 5.56% (1-17)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Churchill, 2. Whitman, 3. BCC, 4. WJ, 5. Einstein, 6. Kennedy, 7. Wheaton
Churchill holds the inside track to the #1 seed after their win over Whitman this past week. They are heavy favorites in their remaining games with Gaithersburg and Richard Montgomery. Whitman will cruise over Wootton and Magruder, but Churchill's just needs one win to avoid a tie and a coin flip.
Right now, BCC has a slight edge for the #3 seed as they have the tiebreaker over WJ, but the BCC loss to Sherwood and WJ's close win over Rockville has made this interesting. BCC finishes with games vs RM and Blair. They will be favorites but both opponents are capable of getting a win. WJ finishes with Sherwood (underdog but winnable) and Northwest (heavily favored). Expect BCC both finish 12-8 and BCC holds onto the 3 seed.
Kennedy likely holds onto the 6 seed even though Wheaton leads right now. Kennedy will be a large underdog to their last opponents (Poolesville and Einstein). Wheaton's schedule is easier with games vs Rockville and Springbrook, but they will be underdogs in each of those games. Kennedy finishes with the 6 seed since they beat Wheaton earlier in the year.
4A West Region Section 2 Standings
1. Clarksburg - 77.78% (14-4)
2. Quince Orchard - 66.67% (12-6)
3. Richard Montgomery - 58.82% (10-7)
4. Gaithersburg - 52.94% (9-8)
5. Northwest - 27.78% (5-13)
6. Wootton - 5.56% (1-17)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Clarksburg, 2. QO, 3. RM, 4. Gaithersburg, 5. Northwest, 6. Wootton
Clarksburg has distanced themselves from the pack and has clinched the #1 seed despite their recent two-game losing streak to Damascus and Poolesville. Even though they close with Seneca Valley (they are favorites) and Paint Branch (underdogs) and QO has an easy schedule, Clarksburg holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over QO.
Quince Orchard has almost clinched the #2 seed since they have tiebreakers over RM and Gaithersburg and were helped by Rockville's win over RM. QO plays Watkins Mill and Gaithersburg and should finish no worse than 13-7. One win or a RM loss and QO locks into the 2 seed. Richard Montgomery has a very difficult closing schedule, playing Whitman, BCC, and Churchill. Gaithersburg has a good chance to catch RM for the 4 seed. Gaithersburg finishes with Springbrook, Churchill, and QO. This battle could get very interesting as Gaithersburg will likely finish 10-10 or even 11-9 (depending on beating QO). RM likely finishes no better than 11-9 or could even fall to 10-10. They have split their two matchups so the 3 seed might come down to a coin flip.
Northwest and Wootton will finish as the 5 and 6 seeds.
The section tournament could be interesting. While Clarksburg won by 20 over QO, they lost to RM and beat Gaithersburg twice by a combined six points. It's all about matchups!
4A North Region Section 2 Standings
1. Paint Branch - 88.89% (16-2)
2. Sherwood - 83.3% (15-3)
3. Blair - 41.18% (7-10)
4. Urbana - 38.9% (7-11)
5. Northwood - 38.9% (7-11)
6. Springbrook - 35.29% (6-11)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Paint Branch, 2. Sherwood, 3. Northwood (project at 9-11), 4. Blair (8-11), 5. Springbrook (8-12), 6. Urbana (7-13) - any upsets and this gets really interesting!
This section will be interesting! Paint Branch and Sherwood will be the top two seeds and have first-round byes. Paint Branch got a big win easily over Whitman on Monday and they easily handled Magruder. The remainder of their schedule isn't a cupcake with road trips at Damascus and Clarksburg but they will be heavily favored. Paint Branch is 8-0 since Heather Podosek returned to the bench. They will finish no worse than 16-4, but 18-2 is more likely. Sherwood's schedule is a bit easier as they finish with WJ and Blake after a good win over BCC. Sherwood will be favored over WJ and BCC, although only slightly over BCC. Sherwood likely finishes no worse than 17-3, meaning that Paint Branch needs to keep their foot on the gas over their last two to make sure they don't have to rely on a coin flip for the top seed. Given their experience, Paint Branch is the favorite for the top seed.
The rest of this section is very chaotic. Blair will only play 19 games so they cannot end up in a tie with anyone. Their last two games are Einstein and BCC. They will finish no worse than 7-12 and may finish 8-11. Springbrook has BCC, Gaithersburg, Blake, and Wheaton and will finish no worse than 8-12 and if they can upset Gaithersburg, they will be 9-11. Northwood has two games left and they will be favorites over Watkins Mill and Northwest as well. Northwood can easily finish 9-11 and will finish no worse than 8-12. Urbana sits at 7-11 and has just two games remaining, at Oakdale and home against Walkersville. They will not be favorites in either game and could easily finish 7-13. In tiebreakers between Springbrook, Northwood, and Urbana, only Springbrook and Northwood have played and Springbrook has the head to head advantage. Any tiebreaker involving Urbana likely involves a coin flip.
3A West Section 1 Standings
1. Westminster - 72.2% (13-5)
2. Rockville - 55.56% (10-8)
3. Manchester Valley - 35.71% (5-9)
4. Blake - 33.3% (6-12)
5. Watkins Mill - 27.78% (5-13)
6. Magruder - 0% (0-18)
PROJECTIONS - 1. Westminster, 2. Rockville, 3. Manchester Valley, 4. Blake, 5. Watkins Mill, 6. Magruder
The section championship goes through Carroll County. Westminster is 13-5 with remaining games against Liberty and Glenelg and they will be favored over both teams. Westminster will hold the #1 seed.
Rockville has been one of the great surprises in MCPS play this year. Currently, they sit at 10-8 and they have games against Wootton and Wheaton remaining. They are heavy favorites against Wootton and Wheaton and will finish 12-8 to get the #2 seed.
Watkins Mill likely takes the 5 seed, but they could get the 4 seed. They sit at 5-13 with games left against QO and Northwood. They could get to 6-14, but 7-13 is likely too much to ask. Blake has a hard closing schedule being at Springbrook and Sherwood at home and will finish no better than 7-13 and could end up 6-14. Watkins Mill has the tiebreaker over Blake, so if they can even the records, they would get the higher seed. Ultimately, this will decide who gets to host the rematch in the playoffs.
Manchester Valley is the outlier. They are 5-9 with remaining games against Fallston (toss up), Liberty (they play twice and MV would be the underdog), New Town (underdog), Owings Mill (favored) and Winters Mill (underdog). MV could get to as high as 8-12 or even 9-11. If they get to 8-12, they will get the 3 seed, even at 7-13 they may end up with the 3 seed without a coin flip. Expect them to come through with the 3 seed.
2A West Section 2 Standings
1. Middletown - 88.89% (16-2)
2. Poolesville - 83.33% (15-3)
3. Damascus - 72.22% (13-5)
4. Walkersville - 70.59% (12-5)
5. Seneca Valley - 55.56% (10-8)
6. Williamsport - 42.86% (6-8) - missing games in their schedule
PROJECTIONS - 1. Middletown, 2. Poolesville, 3. Walkersville, 4. Damascus, 5. Seneca Valley, 6. Williamsport
This gets the vote for the MOST COMPETITIVE section in MPSSAA this year. Middletown has the inside track for the top seed. They sit at 16-2 with two games remaining against Linganore and Tuscarora. While Middletown is favored in both matchups, both teams are capable of pulling the upset. In a game that does not matter in the seeding, Middletown did beat Poolesville 50-42 in a Christmas holiday tournament.
Poolesville remains hot on the trail of Middletown with a 13-3 record including a 10 game win streak. The defending MPSSAA 2A State Champions finish with games against Kennedy and Damascus (in a game that will decide the 3A/2A MCPS Division Champion). While Poolesville will be heavily favored against Kennedy, they have toss-up game against Damascus (13-5 and beaten Poolesville already once), although that last game is at Poolesville in one of the toughest gyms to visit in Montgomery County. Poolesville needs too much help to catch Middletown. The Falcons could get to 17-3 but won't finish worse than 16-4.
The Falcons' win over Clarksburg on Tuesday night likely is enough to hold off Walkersville who currently sits at 12-5. Walkersville has three remaining games against Tuscarora, Boonsboro, and Urbana. Walkersville will be favored in all three and likely finish at 15-5.
Damascus hovers behind Walkerville at 13-5 but seems fairly locked into the 4 seed. The Hornets have a very difficult remaining two games with a home game against Paint Branch and a visit to Poolesville. The Hornets' big wins over Clarksburg and Einstein have kept them in the hunt for the 2 seed, but they would have to stay perfect over their last two games to get to 15-5 and a coin flip for the 3 seed.
Seneca Valley currently sits at 10-8, but the Eagles closing schedule is brutal including games at Clarksburg and RM at home. Seneca Valley seems to be a strong bet for the 5 seed, but if Williamsport closes strong, there is an outside chance the Eagles fall to the 6 seed.
