Final MCPS Top 10
Here is it! The final #MoCoGBB #MCPS #Top10! Feel free to debate all summer until our pre-season poll in December. Remember to check out the All-Division Teams...
#1 - BCC HS (18-9)
What a run by BCC!!! Possibly one of the greatest post-season runs in MCPS history - nothing like putting it all together at the end of the year. BCC only had one four game winning streak all year until they entered their last two regular season games. Six wins later, they had secured the #3 seed in 4A West Section 1, had gotten "payback" playoff wins over then #1 Churchill HS and #2 Whitman HS (BCC was a combined 0-4 against both schools before the postseason) and won back-to-back 4A West Region Championships! They fell to Old Mill HS in the 4A Maryland State Semifinal in a tight game. Congrats Barons!
Key Wins (7): Churchill, Whitman, Poolesville, RM, WJ, QO, Gaithersburg
Losses: Churchill (2x), Whitman (2x), Bullis, Paint Branch, Sherwood
#2 - Churchill HS (22-2)
Churchill was the team to beat in Montgomery County thought the year. Their only losses were on a banked in three pointer at the buzzer to Whitman and an overtime loss to BCC in the 4A West Section 1 title game. Unfortunately, this team may be remembered for last loss instead of the great season that they had. Cat Correa graduates, but the rest of this great team will give MCPS fits next year. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a 4A South co-Division Title with Whitman after splitting with the Vikings in the regular season and sweeping BCC. Churchill struggled early in the section final, trailing BCC by 16 points before a 4th quarter rally tied the game and sent it to overtime. A last second shot by POY Brittini Martin rolled off the rim and the Barons had pulled the upset.
Key Wins (13): BCC (2x), Whitman (2x), Paint Branch, Sherwood, Damascus, WJ, RM (2x), QO (2x), Gaithersburg
Losses: Whitman, BCC
The next 3 teams were very difficult to rank. While Paint Branch lost to Damascus (who Poolesville beat twice at the end of the year), and Poolesville had more quality wins than Paint Branch, PB also beat BCC and Whitman who had beaten Poolesville. Ultimately, Paint Branch was 4-2 verse the common opponents of Sherwood, Clarksburg, Damascus, Whitman and BCC. Meanwhile, Poolesville was 4-4 against the same competition.
#3 - Paint Branch HS (19-5)
Paint Branch sported the 2nd highest average margin of victory in MCPS (31.7 point differential) as they averaged 64.7 points per game (top in Montgomery County). The Panthers never got their rubber match against Sherwood in the 4A North Section 2 tournament, but they took care of business to ear another section championship. Paint Branch fell to Western in the 4A North Region Final. The Panthers did not have a bad loss all season, although that late season loss to Damascus made ranking them a bit more difficult.
Key Wins (6): WJ, RM, Clarksburg, BCC, Whitman, Sherwood
Losses: Churchill, Sherwood, Damascus, Western, St. John's College Prep
#4 - Poolesville HS (19-5)
Poolesville's loss to BCC takes on a new light after BCC's run to the state semifinals. Poolesville lost by 2 at Damascus, lost twice to 2A State Finalist Middletown and to Whitman early in the year. A great team had to play in one of the tougher sections in MPSSAA and the Falcons made another section final after winning 13 games in a row, including defeats of Clarksburg, Damascus, Rockville (twice) and Gaithersburg. COY Fred Swick replaced 80% of his starting lineup after last year's 2A State Championship. He has most of his team back next year that should make another great team out in Poolesville. Unlike some other teams on this list, the Falcons had no wins over BCC, Churchill (did not play), Paint Branch (DNP), or Whitman, but they still had 9 quality wins over some very good teams.
Key Wins (9) - Damascus (2x), Clarksburg, Sherwood, Rockville (2x), QO, WJ, Gaithersburg
Losses - Damascus, Middletown (2x), Whitman, and BCC
#5 - Whitman HS (20-4)
Whitman had a terrific season! Unfortunately Whitman has to deal with both Churchill and BCC in their section. Congratulations to the Vikings on sharing their 4A South co-Division Title with Churchill after splitting with the Bulldogs in the regular season and sweeping BCC. Viking senior Elyse Lowet will have many memories from her senior season, including a buzzer-beating banked in 3-pointer at Churchill and a school record 11 3-pointers in one game. Whitman has more quality wins than Paint Branch, but also had a loss that ended up being considered a poorly loss as Holy Child struggled this year, and a win over Bullis that was not quite as big a win as prior years. Whitman also lost to Paint Branch later in the year.
Key Wins (9): BCC (2x), Churchill, Bullis, Poolesville, WJ (2x), QO, RM
Losses: BCC, Churchill, Paint Branch, Holy Child
#6 - Clarksburg HS (19-6)
Clarksburg is another young team that progressively got better, but stumbled a little down the stretch as their schedule became more difficult. They lost 3 of their last 4 in the regular season to Damascus, Poolesville, and Paint Branch, but rallied to knock off Gaithersburg for a 3rd time, and then beat RM to avenge a regular season loss to win the section title. They also won their first MCPS division title in the 4A West Division. They fell to BCC in the Region Final during the Barons great run. Overall, two titles is what has them ranked as the best team of the second half of the top 10.
Key Wins (6) - Damascus, RM, QO, Gaithersburg (3x)
Losses - BCC, Poolesville, Paint Branch, Damascus, Sherwood, RM
#7 - Sherwood HS (18-5)
Sherwood has a very bright future behind their young team. They will likely be very motivated after an early exit from the 4A North Section 2 tournament. The Warriors had a great regular season, beating Paint Branch, BCC, and Clarksburg and earning a co-Division title. Unfortunately, they got upset by Blair in the second semifinals as they could not close out the game and the Blazers hit some big 3-pointers. Sherwood will definitely be a tough team to beat in 2019-20.
Key Wins (6): BCC, Paint Branch, Clarksburg, Rockville, Gaithersburg, WJ
Losses: Churchill, Poolesville, Paint Branch, Blair
#8 - Damascus HS (17-7)
The Hornets had some big wins including a 7 game win streak towards the end of the year that included victories over Clarksburg and Paint Branch. They did have a few loses to teams that had tougher seasons, especially Urbana and TJ. If this ranking were completed with 1 game to go in the regular season, they would have been in the top 5, but two loses to Poolesville, surrounded by a tough playoff win at home over Seneca Valley, drops them to #8 in the final poll
Key Wins (5) - Poolesville, Paint Branch, Clarksburg, WJ, Gaithersburg
Losses - Churchill, Poolesville (2x), Rockville, Urbana, TJ, Clarksburg
Three teams battled for the last two spots. Quince Orchard had the better overall record at 15-8, however, Richard Montgomery won the all important playoff battle in the 4A West Section 2 semifinals and earned a section final appearance. Rockville beat RM twice and also earned a section final appearance, beating Manchester Valley in the postseason. QO would definitely be at the top of the "other receiving votes" category. Rockville (Damascus) and RM (Clarksburg) also earned signature wins during the season.
#9 - Rockville HS (14-10)
Rockville was a surprise team in Montgomery County under Coach Gretchen Gregg. They Started the season 0-3, but all three loses were to solid teams in close games (Sherwood, Gaithersburg, and Quince Orchard). They rebounded with a 6 game win streak and won 3 of their last 4 before the playoffs. The highlights of their year were the season sweep of Rockville rival Richard Montgomery and a big 19 point signature win over Damascus. Rockville's top players were freshman and they are a team to beat in 3A/2A next season.
Key Wins (3): Damascus, RM (2x)
Losses: BCC, Sherwood, Gaithersburg, QO, Poolesville (2x), Clarksburg, WJ
#10 - Richard Montgomery HS (14-11)
RM closes out this version of the poll, just edging out Quince Orchard. While Quince Orchard dominated their matchup with RM during the regular season, Richard Montgomery earned a little "payback" behind the play of POY Anujin Dashdorj, defeating QO in the section semifinals. Richard Montgomery earned a second consecutive section final appearance, but fell just short (by 2 points) to Clarksburg who they had beat in the regular season. RM had a very difficult schedule, playing a closing stretch of Rockville (twice), Gaithersburg, Whitman, BCC, Churchill, QO, and Clarksburg in last 10 games. They graduate no player who played significant minutes and should have a good team coming back next year.
Key Wins (3): Clarksburg, QO, Gaithersburg
Losses: BCC, Churchill (2x), Whitman, Clarksburg, Rockville (2x), QO, Gaithersburg, also lost to Paint Branch and WJ while Dashdorj was out
